Did you know... ?

Did you know 23 January 2012 – 9 February 2013 is the Year of The Dragon in the Chinese zodiac?

Does this mean it will be our year to win the House Competition?  We’ve made a great start so far!

Image001

“Dragons are magnanimous, stately, vigorous, strong, self-assured, proud, noble, direct, dignified, eccentric, intellectual, fiery, passionate, decisive, pioneering, artistic, generous, loyal, wise, humble, imperious, foresighted, demanding, intolerant, peaceful, impetuous, understanding, and blunt”  Can you spot any of these qualities in yourself?

You guys rock!

Samui 1st place = 850 house points!

Lanta 2nd place = 710 house points

Phuket 3rd place = 700 house points

Chang 4th place = 660 house points

A fantastic term’s work of which we can all be justifiably proud.

Personal highlights for me have been that:

·      We’ve gone from a dismal 4th place in the recycling last year to a superb 1st – we even beat Phuket!

·      Special thanks for this must surely go to 7P and 7T as they truly have been the Kings and Queens of recycling this term – thank you to Y7 Dragons for their efforts!

·      The two tutor groups who handed in the most credits from Y8 were 8M and 8G – both Samui groups; well done and thank you!

·      The two tutor groups who handed in the most credits from Y9 were 9S and 9P – both Samui groups; well done and thank you!

Well done to all of you and thank you for your efforts this term.  See you back and refreshed in term 2 – let’s see if we can hold on to our title of winners of House Athletics for a second year!

House writing competition - Tita's winning entry

1st place for Tita and if you read it I’m sure you’ll see why…

Tita Kanjanapas 10W Samui           KS4/Senior Studies Winner

You there. Yes you! What do you think you’re doing here? Really, imagine being in school at this ungodly hour. Forgot your bag say? Well go and get it then! Kids these day I really shou –whats that? What am I doing here? How rude, I am the janitor of course. You’ve never seen me before. Well. You’re just unobservant then aren’t you? Honestly, Patana kids are a snobbish lot nowadays aren’t they. Not at all like they were in the past, ah yes, those were the days; the days when the glory of the Samet house rained down upon the school hallways and –eh? Yes there is. There has always been a Samet house. No there are five...well, were five. Old minds like mine don’t forget things like that…That is a very good question. What didn’t happen when Samet house was around? Bless, they were magnificent. They wore their wonderful purple shirts to scho –yes there was. They had their own special shirt made just for them. Don’t interrupt me child. Now, where was I. Ah yes, did you know houses used to be selective? There was a hat see. A hat that –no it didn’t talk silly. Hats don’t talk. Harry who? Don’t be silly now. The hat measured the size of your head. The largest heads were always the smartest, therefore were always contested over by Phuket and Samui house. The narrowest heads were the athletes…why? Aerodynamics child! Doesn’t school teach you anything? Then the flat ones were artistic ones. These were always sought by Chang house. However it was Samet house that always picked first. They say Billigan, the head of Samet house had a deal with the principle, Norwin. They had a calculation for the perfect head shape that procured them legends, year after year. After a while the other houses got jealous. How could they not? Samets got the best grades, they dominated the sports teams, they wrote symphonies. Bless, they were a polite lot too, always picking up trash and recycling. What happened next could only be described as criminal. The heads of the other house decided to poison the Samet’s water! And yes, they had their own water. They only drank mineral water imported from France. Kill them? Good god no! Don’t you think a couple hundred dead bodies would be hard to hide? What the poison did was make them old, just old enough so that they couldn’t go to school. Each child had a massive growth spurt, until the school had to kick them out. The board feared government intervention and banned people from talking about it. They punished houses by preventing them from choosing their students. Billigan was devastated by the loss of his legends and swore to remain at the school, hidden, until the time was right for Samet house to rise again. Now child, you must go. Your mother must be waiting. My name? Well…since you listened so well. You may call me Bill.

House Athletics - records from previous years

Boys&girlsrecords.xlsx Download this file

House Athletics is on Wednesday 8th February 2012.

Have a look at the spread sheet to see what the current record from previous years for each event is.  There are no records for 300m and up because we’ve just found out that the track’s a bit too short – this problem will be fixed for this year’s events.

Think you can beat any of those records?  Great!  Look out for more details about how you sign up for an event and bring glory to Samui after the Christmas break.  5 bonus points to everyone who breaks a record!

Samui House Logo and Banner competition

Why on Earth is the Chang logo and banner on the Samui blog?!

Image006

Image007

Last year Chang held a competition within their house to create a logo and a banner.  Mr Weston then worked with the winning designs to turn them into the polished, professional looking images above.

All of the House Leaders agree that it would be great to have similar images for all of the houses that we can use on websites, publications and T-shirts, etc.  Similar for Samui means that we would keep the circular emblem but replace the elephant head with a dragon and the Chang writing with something more rousingly Samui.  Therefore I’d like to get your input into what the new Samui logo and banner should look like.

There are two parts to this competition.

Competition 1: Slogan

·        Chang use “Are you green with envy?” which, despite myself, I have to admit that is rather good.  Can you think of a slogan about Samui house?  It doesn’t have to be a question, and it doesn’t have to mention our colour – it just has to be short, catchy and memorable and say something positive about who we are as a house.

Competition 2: Image

·        Chang use an elephant’s head so obviously we will use a dragon.  This could be a whole dragon or just the dragon’s head.  It should be a bold and striking image.  Personally I’m not thinking cute is the way forward here – ferocious and indomitable are more what I’ve got in mind!

You can enter either competition or both and it’s easy to do so – just send me an e-mail (maba@patana.ac.th) with your slogan or artwork before we break up for Christmas.  Haven’t got a scanner to scan your image in?  No worries – just come and give me a hard copy of your image and I’ll help you to scan it.

And your reward if you win?  The glory of having your creative spirit immortalised forever as a Patana icon!  Not enough?  I think I can stretch to a Pizza lunch for you and a select group of your friends.  May the smell of melted mozzarella spur you on to greater creative heights!

MVD

Image001

MVD (Most Valuable Dragon) for this week goes to Nat in Y10.

During the Inter-house basketball he was giving it 110% on the court and was a key player for Samui scoring the winning basket in one of the matches.

His dedication to his house was so great that he played until he dropped.  Literally.

Nat fractured one of the bones in his ankle and had to go to hospital.  You’ll see him around school in a wheel chair with a cast on his foot…

Small price to pay for the honour of being this week’s MVD though, right Nat?!

What a legend.

Can you give a little bit more... ?

The recycling figures are so close that there’s just 14.4 Baht between us in the lead and Phuket in second.  Can you help us to widen the gap?  Please bring in what you can from home.  If it’s a lot then please take a photo of it and e-mail it to me so I can see who our top recyclers are!

Keep up the fantastic work – another amazing effort on recycling from 7P today!

Cheers,

Mr B

Y7 - please bring in your basketball kit for inter-house sports during tutorial on Thursday

Dear Y7 Dragon,

Just a quick reminder to bring in your basketball kit for inter-house sports during tutorial on Thursday.

If you can’t play because you’re injured then please, please bring a note in.  Conduct Detentions for non-participation I’m afraid so make sure you’re properly dressed and take part.  On the plus side there are bonus points for any house that turns up in full kit, so let’s win those!

Y12 Dragons laid down the gauntlet by winning their competition earlier in the year; can you match their style on the court?

Go SAMUI!

House points competition - most recent results!

1st = Lanta 320 points

2nd = Samui 280 points

3rd = Phuket 230 points

4th = Chang 170 points

That’s a great position for us to be in, Dragons.  Lanta are winning (just!) because of their victory in the swimming galas but we’re right behind them!  Don’t forget to collect your recycling while we’re off school so we can fill the bins when we return to school and jump into first place!
