Recycling - 3rd place?!

For the first time this year we’re down in 3rd place for the weekly recycling totals.  Damn!

We’re still number one overall but not if Phuket have another couple of weeks like last week!

Image001

Our Y7s continue to do us proud every week with bags and bags every Tuesday morning and the Samui Crack Recycling Squad on a Tuesday lunctime.  So we’re really looking for improvement from the rest of you guys; it’s good for the planet, it pays for the education of less financially advantaged students than you and it shows your love of your house – please start bringing some more recycling in! J

Thanks,

Mr B

The Lions just can't shake us!

How hardCORE are the Dragons?  This table shows the submissions to CORE magazine…

Chang

Samui

Lanta

Phuket

26

What a fantastic effort!  Thank you to all 30 of you who contributed!

So the House Points from CORE were as follows:

Samui = 40 House Points

Chang = 30 House Points

Phuket = 20 House Points

Lanta = 10 House Points

Add that to the wins by Y13 and Y11 in their Dodgeball competitions and we really are breathing down Lanta’s necks!

Image001

I’ve got a good feeling that the quiz could see us catapulted back into first place again! J  But only if you sign up.  Well done to Y11 students who’ve very nearly completed their sign up but everyone else needs to have a look at the links and then see your Year Leaders to sign-up.

House Quiz sign-up

Dear Dragons,

After a dismal 4th place in House Athletics and an encouraging 2nd place in the Swimming Galas we’re really looking for a big victory in the House Quiz.  And we’ve certainly got the pedigree to do it – we won the House Quiz last year!

The date is Thursday 14th March during tutorial Periods 1+2 and, as you might have seen in daily notices this morning, the sign-up starts now!

There are 3 subject specific quizzes:

·        Arts & Culture - English language and literature, Thai, MFL, Art, Drama https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pSiKkX-omxDpdHJd6ZQ1bXAoCO6pcpuukTNFBp72ySc/edit#

·        World & Current Affairs - History, Geography, Business Studies, Economics, Sports, Music & The News https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eSiQg5haKt4CGAx3dJ49YA8zjzxiZWV2TSlJoqT6sEQ/edit#

·        Science & Technology - Sciences, Design Technology, Maths, ICT https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-N_zEDTfKKdog_yabc2KOrBnziWLFCvnY0eWjW5xGGs/edit#

We need 3 people from each year group in Y7 to 9 to sign up for the KS3 team and 2 people from each year group in Y10 to 13 to sign up for the KS4/5 team for each of these 3 quizzes.  Are you the right person for the job?  You should be one of the strongest in your Year Group at one of the above subjects to volunteer.

The fourth quiz is…

·        General Knowledge https://docs.google.com/document/d/1O5Ckob4LXJ0zEWiSjv9HSp5q05VR_vH8HH9dWJYZk6o/edit#

This quiz has 5 teams which are Y7 to Y13 and we need 2 people from each Year Group.  Even if you’re not the most academic student you can volunteer for this one because maybe you’ll be the person who knows how many different flavours of ice-cream you can buy at Swensens or the longest word in the Welsh language when those crazy questions come up!  And if you don’t there’s 13 other people on the team who might!

So are you interested in helping us defend our title as the brain-boxes of Patana?  Sign up with your Year Leaders ASAP - they’ve got editing rights on the Google Docs (links above)

Can’t remember who your Year Leaders are?  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a934uQ3OtMn8Ol48u-dEeGC3VOH8fi4oCTuif6rIhp4/edit

Let’s make this a great Samui victory – 200 House Points up for grabs and that could catapult us back into our rightful position of first place – Lanta are within our sights!

Yr 13 Inter-house Dodgeball Results

Mr Osbourne says…

“It has taken me ages going through the results and I had to use the calculator to double and triple check!!   The original results were:

Girls Dodgeball:

1.  Lanta

2.  Chang

3.  Phuket

4. Samui

Boys Dodgeball:

1. Samui

2.  Chang

3.  Lanta

4.  Phuket

Adding into account that Samui gained a bonus point through having full kit (J nice job guys!) meant the overall table looked like this:

Overall:

1st place – Samui, Chang & Lanta

4th – Phuket.

To separate the first place houses we had to go to hits difference i.e. how many times they were hit against how many times they hit the opponents.  This was taken from both the boys and girls and added together and finished like this:

Samui – got hit 171 times, hit the opposition 179 times = +8 Hits difference

Chang – got hit 164 times, hit the oppostion 171 times = +7 Hits difference

Lanta – got hit 181 times, hit the opposition 187 times = +6 Hits difference

It was super close but all this means the final standings were:

1.  Samui

2.  Chang

3.  Lanta

4.  Phuket”

Well done Y13!  What a great win for 40 House Points in your last ever Inter-house competition! J

Commendationtasic! Keep it up!

For the first time this year Red 10 and Red 11 are topping the tables for Commendations!  Awesome work – keep it up!

Don’t be afraid to politely remind you teachers to give you one when you’ve done something that deserves it J

Music and Drama = House Points

Great news: if you’re involved with Musical Performances or Drama Productions during the school year then you’ll be helping to earn House Points for Samui!

Ms Thew is keeping track of the number of times each student makes a contribution to the Performing Arts and she’ll announce the winning house in Term 3.  So what are you waiting for?  Go and sign up for the next concert or the next performance now!

Red7 Rock the Recycling!

Amazing recycling effort by Red7 this morning – every single students in the whole year group recycled!  Nice job!

And 6 volunteers came to help out with the Samui Crack Recycling Squad at lunchtime.  I’m sure we’re going to top the recycling charts again this week!

Recycling results

We’re still in the lead but Chang closed the gap on us last week.  Only by 10.5 Baht but it’s a matter of pride for us now – let’s have a big week this week and show them who’s boss!

Swimming Galas - overall results!

Dear Dragons,

In term 1 we lost 50 house points to Chang in House Athletics when they beat our overall score by just 8 points.  The worst thing was that we only had ourselves to blame – for the first time ever there were empty lanes and the famous Samui House Spirit just wasn’t there.

But what a difference I’ve witnessed over the last 2 days!  The Y7s and Y8s were magnificent in the water yesterday – we’ve got some serious swimming talent in Y7 especially and our top swimmers collected a whole host of school records.  Our Y9s and Y10s weren’t as strong in the water today but there were still some fantastic performances by some very talented individuals.  But that’s not what really impressed me.  The thing that really made me proud was the great team spirit that everyone showed: C swimmers who’d swum 4 races back to back but got in there and did another because their friend was injured; A swimmers who swam in every race because there was only a couple of them in the A category; B swimmers who got in there and had a go even if butterfly is their least favourite stroke.  And did that awesome team spirit make any difference to the results this time?

The overall House Swimming Gala scores:

·       1st Lanta (927 + 805 = 1732) è 200 House Points

·       2nd Samui (by the skin of our teeth!!) ( 684 + 825 = 1509) è 150 House Points

·       3rd Chang (775 + 733 = 1508) è 100 House Points

·       4th Phuket (719 +727 = 1446) è 50 House Points

Can you believe that?!  After all those races there was just 1 point in it!  Just imagine, if any of our C racers had slowed down in the Boogie Board Relay even for a second and come in 4th instead of 3rd, Chang would have beaten us.  If any of our B racers had decided not to give it 100% in the 100m IM because it’s such a hard race, Chang would have beaten us.  If any of our A racers had taken their foot of the gas and not broken a school record, Chang would have beaten us.  If any single one of you who competed in the galas had given even slightly less than your very maximum effort, Chang would have beaten us.  But for the last 2 days, you’ve truly shown what it means to belong to Samui and we beat Chang.

Well done to all of the swimmers from Y7 to 10 – a superb 150 house point that every single last one of you contributed to.

Dread the Red! J

Mr B
